Malaria - Minnesota Dept. of Health

Malaria is a mosquitoborne disease that is caused by a parasite (Plasmodium species). It is found in many countries including sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, as well as Central and South America. Malaria is a serious illness and can be deadly but prevention methods are available. Malaria is still a public health concern in North America even though it was eliminated from the United States in the early 1950’s. Most cases of malaria in the United States are in travelers and immigrants.
